| An avantgarde orchestra in an avantgarde world | |
The Avatar Orchestra Metaverse works with its growing repertoire of compositions made especially for it and the three dimensional virtual enviroment of Second Life that is both the Orchestral home and its contextual base. In the spring 2007 the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse arose to the needs to perform two projects simultaneously, Vicky's Mosquitos #13 by Hars Hefferman and Fadheit by Maximillian Nakamura. When performing, the Orchestra works with audio samples, and there are many ways to trigger audio samples within Second Life. The Orchestra builds its own virtual instruments and installations specific for each piece, and in this way each individual performer are able to trigger sounds independent from one another. These instruments feature sound, visuals, and animations, and a performance of a jumping, hovering, floating, dancing, and twirling Avatar Orchestra Metaverse is a truly spectacular event. The Orchestra does not have a fixed size, and there is an ever changing mix of skills, fields, backgrounds, and generations shaping the Orchestra at any time. As the performers are based globaly on planet earth, organizing the Orchestra in such an elastic manner makes the logistics easier, yet this lack of membership constitution also contribute to the esthetics and the indeterminate processes that makes live performances in Second Life. In addition to the changing body of the Orchestra, there are plenty more factors in play. Even if the Orchestra perform composed pieces and do follow a score and a conductor, the result is dependent on both the performers and the virtual environment in which they play. A unique aspect of the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse is its size that makes it possible for them to work with sound in a vastly more fluent and varied way than can smaller constallations. The Orchestra is equally much a tool for performing as it is a vehicle for continued experimentation, and approach Second Life as an instrument itself.
